As Bangladesh steps into the nuclear era, we reflect on what this historic moment means for our nation and its future.
Introduction
April 28, 2026 will be remembered as the day Bangladesh changed forever.
In Ishwardi, Pabna — at the site of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant — history was made when the formal fuel loading process began at Unit 1 of the country’s first-ever nuclear power facility. With this single, momentous step, Bangladesh joined an elite group of 33 nations around the world that harness the power of nuclear energy for electricity generation.
At KKR Move On, we are filled with pride and admiration as we witness this extraordinary chapter unfold for our beloved country.
Why This Milestone Matters
The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is far more than a construction project. It is the embodiment of Bangladesh’s ambition — a symbol of what a determined nation can achieve when it dares to dream big and works relentlessly to make those dreams real.
Built with the expertise of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom, the plant stands as a $12.65 billion investment in Bangladesh’s future. Constructed in full compliance with post-Fukushima international nuclear safety standards, it features state-of-the-art passive safety systems capable of self-cooling for up to 72 hours without any human intervention. It also includes a “core catcher” — a cutting-edge safety vessel designed to contain molten reactor fuel in the most extreme emergency scenarios.
This is not just powerful energy — it is safe, reliable, and sustainable energy.
The Road Ahead
The journey to full operation is now well underway:
- July–August 2026: Upon completion of fuel loading, approximately 300 MW of electricity will be supplied to the national grid on a trial basis
- Late 2026 / Early 2027: Unit 1 will reach its full operational capacity of 1,200 MW
- 2027: Unit 2 is scheduled to come online, bringing the plant’s total output to an impressive 2,400 MW
When this capacity is fully realised, it will dramatically reduce Bangladesh’s dependence on imported fossil fuels, stabilise energy costs, and power a new era of industrial and economic growth across the country.
KKR Move On’s Perspective
At KKR Move On, we have always believed that progress begins with energy — not just the electricity that powers our factories and homes, but the collective energy of a people who refuse to stand still.
Rooppur represents exactly that spirit. It tells the world that Bangladesh is not a country waiting for opportunity. Bangladesh is a country that creates it.
We extend our warmest congratulations to the Government of Bangladesh, to the engineers and scientists who made this possible, to Rosatom and all international partners, and most importantly — to every Bangladeshi citizen whose taxes, patience, and belief helped bring this vision to life.
The future is bright. And at KKR Move On, we are honoured to be part of a nation bold enough to light it up.
Forward, Bangladesh. We are with you every step of the way.
